MUCL/GINCO increases its offer of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi

GINCO, the Glomeromycota in vitro collection was created in 2001 with the objective to provide the scientific community and industrial sector with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) of high-quality pathogen-free, cultured in vitro.

This collection is the brainchild of Prof. Stéphane Declerck (BCCM/MUCL) and Dr Yolande Dalpé (ECORC, Canada) and is nowadays the first international collection of AMF cultured strictly in vitro on root organs and responding to the standard ISO 9001.

Over the years, the MUCL/GINCO team has focused its efforts on the cultivation and preservation of these fungi. Today, 26 strains are maintained under continuous culture and numbers of them, as well as root organs, are offered to the scientists and industrials.

Recently, the collection has doubled its offer of Rhizophagus species that are publicly available and soon it will extend to Gigaspora species. These fungi are more recalcitrant to mass-production in vitro and are atypical cultures still requiring adaptation of the packaging system before being released.

For more information please consult the BCCM/MUCL catalogue, using Mycorrhiza as organism type.
