In a clinical context, antimicrobial susceptibility testing is important to confirm susceptibility to chosen empirical antimicrobial agents or to detect resistance in individual bacterial isolates. However, as the problem of antibiotic resistance and its transfer is not restricted to the hospital environment, monitoring susceptibility to antimicrobials is also increasingly requested for non-pathogenic cultures used worldwide on a massive scale as starter cultures, probiotics, production strains, agricultural inoculants etc.
BCCM/LMG offers antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) as a customer service. For this purpose, BCCM/LMG harbors a valuable collection of internationally used test and control strains. AST is performed with the widely used broth microdilution method as well as the disk diffusion method. Whereas the microdilution method provides quantitative results (i.e., minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC]), the disk diffusion method results in a qualitative assessment using susceptible, intermediate, or resistant categories. In addition to standard AST of clinical isolates, we have specific experience in AST of lactic acid bacteria used as probiotics or food/feed additives as requested by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
The service report includes a detailed description of the methods used and a presentation of test results (e.g. MIC ranges, inhibition zone diameter ranges, etc.) in table format.
