Antifungal susceptibility testing at BCCM/IHEM

BCCM/IHEM performs antifungal susceptibility testing following the EUCAST (European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing) guidelines. The method utilizes broth microdilution plates to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for a series of antifungal drugs.

By default, tested drugs are: amphotericin B, fluconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole, flucytosine and terbinafine.

Other drugs (e.g. echinocandins, isavuconazole, posaconazole, griseofulvin, ciclopirox olamine, etc.) can also be tested on request.

If available, breakpoint values provided by the EUCAST can classify strains as susceptible or resistant. If these breakpoint values are not available, MIC values are compared to data published in the scientific literature in order to suggest the wild type/non-wild type status of the strain.
