The deposit policy of BCCM supports the mission of the Belgian collections, more specifically the deposit, preservation and distribution of microbiological and genetic material. The deposit policy organizes the contractual relationship between BCCM and depositors of biological material.

It is determined by legal obligations, technical constraints and scientific developments. It ensures that BCCM collections:

  • Act in conformity with international and national laws;

  • Protect the rights of our clients and partners, academic or industrial;

  • Ensure quality service.

It addresses, among others, the following issues and regulations:

  • Convention on Biological Diversity and its Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing

  • Regulation EU 511/2014 on compliance measures for users from the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization in the Union, as well as its Commission Implementing Regulation EU 2015/1866

  • Intellectual Property Rights

  • Quality

  • Safety and Security

The deposit policy is translated into the MATERIAL DEPOSIT AGREEMENT (MDA). The MDA details the Terms and Conditions applicable to the deposit of biological material in a BCCM public collection.
