The Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain (BCCM/ITM 500961), known as the new Lineage 8 strain, was found by chance in Rwanda by Claude Semuto. It has been described as a “missing link” in the evolution of tuberculosis (TB), one of the world’s oldest and most deadly pathogens to affect humans and brings us ‘a step closer’ to finding a cure for tuberculosis.
